Dr. Anita Gärtner was born in Toronto, Ontario. Her family moved to British Columbia when she was five years old. Her first language was German. Prior to her studies in dentistry, Dr. Gärtner received her Bachelors of Science Degree at Trinity Western University and her Masters of Science in Genetics at the University of British Columbia. Following her graduation from the school of dentistry at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Gärtner completed a residency program at B.C.'s Children's Hospital in Vancouver.
Dr Gärtner's interests in dentistry involved both public dentistry at the Burnaby School District Dental Program and general dentistry in private practice. She returned to school, completing her specialty certificate in Pediatric Dentistry as well as a Master's of Dental Science degree at the University of Washington.
Dr. Gärtner and Dr. Hung founded Monarch Pediatric Dental Centre in 1997 in Burnaby. Monarch has grown to include orthodontic services since 2000 with the addition of Dr. Kuah. Dr. Chan now joins us in our new location in Port Moody.
Dr. Gärtner is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons, clinical assistant professor at the University of Washington and is on staff at B.C.'s Children's Hospital. She is also active in study clubs in both British Columbia and Washington State.
Dr. Gärtner and her husband, David Makihara reside in North Burnaby, where they are raising their two children. Emily is six years old and attends a French immersion school. Nicole is four years old and attends a preschool. Their family also includes an Oma (grandmother), dog (Maxx) and fish. They enjoy kayaking, picnicking, hiking and swimming
