Obtained his Bachelors of Science degree at the University of Wisconsin. He went on to dental school at the Washington School of Dental Medicine at St. Louis, and graduated on the Dean List in 1977. Dr. Hung has limited his practice to pediatric dentistry since his graduation. He was awarded Fellow of the American Society of Dentistry for Children in 1994. He also obtained his MBA from the University of British Columbia in 1984.

Dr. Hung has more than 25 years of experience with children dental public health. From St. Louis, Dr. Hung went to Saskatchewan, Canada, to be a dental consultant for the children's program of the Saskatchewan government until 1979. From 1979 to 1984, he assumed the post of Dental Director at the Burnaby School District Dental program. He became the dental consultant for the Burnaby Health department and the Burnaby School District Dental program from 1984-2000 after he established a full time pediatric practice in Burnaby in 1984.

Dr. Hung is active in promoting dental public health in BC. He was the chairman of the dental health month of the College of Dental Surgeons of BC for a number of years. He has been a member of the VDDS since 1979, and was also a past director.

Dr. Hung is a clinical assistant professor at the UBC Faculty of Dentistry. He has been teaching the pediatric program at UBC since 1981. He initiated the bussing program at UBC Dental School with Dr. Alan Richardson, and this program has become the backbone of pediatric training at UBC. He has also been on staff at the BC Children's Hospital since 1985.

Monarch Pediatric Dental Centre (Burnaby) was established when Dr. Gärtner joined Dr. Hung in 1997. Dr. Peter Chan joined Monarch as an associate in 2000. Together, they opened Monarch Port Moody in the fall of 2004
